Kieran's Story

Kieran was a fit and healthy postman, but at the age of just 24, he started suffering from severe back pain.  Despite repeated visits to his GP, he was continually mis-diagnosed with various different conditions.

In June 2019, barely able to walk as he was losing feeling in his legs, he went to A and E.  Within 24 hours he received the devastating diagnosis of a spinal tumour.  The tumour turned out to be a rare and aggressive tumour - Ewing sarcoma.

Kieran bravely underwent major spinal surgery and was transferred to Bristol where he courageously endured months of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

"Kieran was a kind, caring and sensitive soul who loved to walk for miles, playing Pokémon Go along the way! He loved being by the sea and strolling along the beach".

By the October he was allowed home between treatments and in April 2020, after his final scan, he was told there was no active sign of the disease.

However, just two months on, Kieran started to get neck and shoulder pain and weakness in his left arm.  Despite undergoing further surgery, within two weeks an MRI scan showed two new tumours and we were told the devastating news that treatment was no longer an option.

In spite of this life shattering news, Kieran and his long-term girlfriend Kelly got engaged, moved in to their own flat and got married! Cancer wasn't going to stop their plans! The wedding meant so much to everyone but especially to Kieran and Kelly. They fulfilled their dreams, it was a beautiful day, one we will always cherish.

Sadly on 5 November 2020 just 12 days after his wedding and 5 days before his 26th birthday, Kieran passed away.

"Kieran left a space that can't be filled, he's loved and missed so much"

Supporting Kieran's Legacy

Kieran is loved and missed so much and this is the reason we have set up Kieran’s Legacy, to raise awareness and money for vital research into this terrible disease.

We want to help raise awareness of Ewing sarcoma to GP’s and other medical professionals so they are not quick to dismiss possible bone cancer symptoms when presented in young people.

Ewing Sarcoma most commonly affects children and young adults aged 10-25.  A child, teenager or adult is diagnosed with primary bone cancer every 10 minutes, but primary bone cancer receives little investment from major UK cancer charities.  This lack of investment means that neither treatment nor survival rates have improved in over 30 years.

By supporting Kieran’s Legacy, you can help to change that.

“Thank you for reading Kieran's story, we really value any contribution or support you can give, however large or small, as together we can make a difference.”
